What happened to the Toyota I knew of the early oughts? The boring Toyota of the past is surely gone. Toyota could have called it a day with the exterior appointments of the 2023 Toyota Raize 1.0 Turbo, but once I stepped inside, I had to do a double take of the badge on the steering wheel. The Toyota Raize is still much bigger than a kei car but knowing that the design has been maximized to be a proper small SUV and not just a watered-down version of its bigger brothers gives it real credibility and makes me love the design even more. Japanese roads especially ones in the suburbs are small and tight, in response Japanese carmakers, with the help of incentives from the government created this new class of small cars with specific engine and size configurations. Kei cars are a wonderful creation brought about by harsh realities. The Toyota Raize is a rebadged JDM Daihatsu Rocky and if you know Daihatsu, they're known for what's called kei cars. The proportionate sizes of the LED tail lamps, the black bar that runs across the rear end, connecting the headlamps, and the slight rear spoiler and mini windshield wiper all look "normal" sized from afar but coming closer reveals its true size. Most small SUVs and crossovers look like sedans or hatchbacks on stilts but the Raize looks like a mini-me Land Cruiser. I reviewed the naturally aspirated version of the Raize last year and I did say that I love the look it was trying to go for, but the top-of-the-line variant still takes the cake.Ī lot of car companies would design the hell out of the front end of vehicles without giving much thought out back, with the 2023 Toyota Raize 1.0 Turbo, that isn't the case. Being a crossover SUV, it has the prerequisite black plastic cladding that blends well with the overall boxy shape of the Raize. ![]() ![]() It borrows design cues from its larger Toyota SUV siblings such as the Toyota Fortuner and Toyota RAV4. Thankfully there are cars like those which we'll be reviewing today that still tugs on my small-car sensibilities but still offer a high ground clearance, macho, SUV styling, and practicality. Part of growing up seems to be about carrying more stuff with you, both emotionally and in real life. These days, though, it seems like I completely understand the need for crossovers, SUVs, and even pickup trucks. Although big and heavy, the Thunderbolt could keep up with the fastest fighters of the war. In fact, along with the three-seat Grumman Avenger, the P-47 was among the heaviest single-engine aircraft of World War Two. And at more than 10,000 pounds empty, it was about 50 percent heavier than the Mustang and nearly twice the weight of of the British Spitfire. ![]() If you ask Google to translate "parallel minor" to German, you will get "parallel moll" – which is dead wrong! WRONG translation by Google Translate If you have never heard of Tp or functional harmony before, you might want to read up on it here (article not yet published). Below I want to point out the peculiarity of Tp (or "Tonikaparallele") symbolizing "relative minor". To learn about the basics of relative and parallel keys, you might want to read my article Relative Minor and Parallel Minor EXPLAINED first. Why is Tp the symbol for "tonic relative"? And what is the difference between parallel and relative minor? The Pythagorean theorem provides that the sum of the squares on the legs of a right triangle is equal to the hypotenuse, and is normally written as: a 2 +b 2 =c 2. In two dimensions, you can find the vector norm using the Pythagorean theorem. It has a length, known as the magnitude or norm, and a direction. A vector is a mathematical object that looks like an arrow. Vector norms specify the length of a vector. It is used in pairs on either side of the value of the vector norm, for example || X ||. The double bar symbol is reserved for vector norms. The norm of a mathematical object is a quantity that describes the length, size, or extent of that object. For example, AB || CD means that the line AB runs parallel to the line CD. To signify that two lines are parallel, you can place the names of the lines on either side of this symbol. Parallel planes are planes in the same three-dimensional space that never intersect. Last but not least, planes themselves can also be parallel. If they are not, they are called skew lines. Two lines that do not meet in three-dimensional space must be on the same plane in order to be parallel. In three-dimensional Euclidean geometrical spaces, two planes or a line and a plane that do not share points are also parallel. If two lines exist on the same plane without every intersecting at any point, then they are parallel.Ĭurves that don’t intersect may also be considered parallel. Parallel lines are lines in a plane that do not meet. ![]() We may also recall a variety of different formulas we were taught that helped us figure out the lengths and surface areas of those shapes.Īnother thing we may remember, is learning about parallel lines. When most of us think about geometry, we picture a series of circles, squares, and triangles. More simply, it is a way to study the sizes, shapes, positions, angles, and dimensions of things. Geometry is a branch of mathematics concerned with the properties and relations of points, lines, surfaces, solids, and higher dimensional analogues. The norm value in between two brackets is the length of a vector. Its second use is to denote a norm when used as brackets. If AB and CD are both lines on a common plane, then “ AB || CD ” means they are parallel. The first meaning indicates parallelism in geometry. Here is a quick cheat sheet to this symbol’s two meanings. Have you come across the symbol || in a text and are unsure what it signifies? No problem. Things become more complicated, however, when we begin to talk about the branch of mathematics known as geometry, not to mention trigonometry or calculus.īut take courage! Fortune favors the brave, and you are never too old to relearn the basic meanings of different mathematical concepts. The symbols for addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication are pretty straightforward. This can be the case regardless of whether we learned them twenty years ago or yesterday. For those among us who are not particularly mathematically inclined, it can be difficult to remember the meanings of mathematical symbols. ![]() Temporary tattoos available on planet earth. ![]() Quirkiest, most eclectic, and by far the most visually appealing So once again this kind of tattoo can be used to show how cool you are. Most of the interviews for this poll were conducted before Clinton's former rival, Bernie Sanders, endorsed her for President. Trump widened his lead among white voters from six points last month to 13 points now, and while Clinton led with white women last month (a group Romney won in 2012), the candidates are now even among white women. Independents were virtually split in last month's poll, but Trump now leads Clinton by 12 points among them. Clinton has lost some ground with independent voters and they have now swung Trump's way. Independents have changed since the last poll. Each candidate is also winning the support of eight in ten of their party's voters. Dunaway's turn as Evelyn Mulwray, the mysterious woman who draws detective Jake Gittes ( Jack Nicholson) into a dark and complicated web of murder, incest and catastrophic business deals, seemed the epitome of every femme fatale to ever stride across a chiaroscuro-lit scene in classic noir. But her turn as the duplicitous Lady De Winter in Richard Lester's splashy, slapstick take on The Three Musketeers (1973) and its 1974 sequel The Four Musketeers: Milady's Revenge (1974) preceded a long period of critical and box office hits, starting with her masterful performance in 1974's Chinatown (1974). Dunaway also balanced these projects with several well-regarded theatrical productions, including a 1972-73 stint as Blanche Du Bois in "A Streetcar Named Desire," and notable TV-movies like The Woman I Love (1972), which cast her as the Duchess of Windsor, and TV broadcasts of Hogan's Goat (1971) and After the Fall (1974). She then bounced between arthouse efforts like Puzzle of a Downfall Child (1970), directed by her ex-boyfriend, photographer Jerry Schatzberg, and the revisionist Western 'Doc' (1971), as well as big-budget efforts like Little Big Man (1970), which cast her as a predatory preacher's wife with designs on Dustin Hoffman's reluctant Native American hero. Dunaway followed this success with another hit, The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), in which her coolly sensual insurance investigator generated considerable sparks with playboy and jewel thief Steve McQueen. Her turn as the naïve but trigger-happy and sexually aggressive Parker earned her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, and provided a direct route to the front of the line for Hollywood leading ladies in an unbelievably short amount of time. Just five months after its release, however, she was wowing audiences across the country as Depression-era bank robber Bonnie Parker in Arthur Penn's controversial Bonnie and Clyde (1967). She picked the latter, enjoying a fruitful stage career for the next two years, which was capped by appearances in "After the Fall" and "Hogan's Goat." The latter - an off-Broadway production in 1967 - required Dunaway to tumble down a flight of steps in every performance, earning her a screen debut in the wan counterculture comedy The Happening (1967). She was given the enviable task of choosing between a Fulbright Scholarship to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts or a role in the Broadway production of "A Man For All Seasons" as a member of the American National Theatre and Academy. After a stint as a teenaged beauty queen in Florida, she intended to pursue education at the University of Florida, but switched to acting, earning her degree from Boston University in 1962. 14, 1941 in Bascom, FL, Dorothy Faye Dunaway was the daughter of MacDowell Dunaway, Jr., a career Army officer, and his wife, Grace April Smith. Then an overwrought turn in the disastrous biopic Mommie Dearest (1981) effectively derailed her career - but, at the same time, made her a bit of a camp favorite in the gay community - though she's been afforded infrequent opportunities worthy of her talent since that unfortunate halt. An icy, elegant blonde with a knack for playing complex and strong-willed female leads, enormously popular actress Faye Dunaway starred in several films which defined what many would come to call Hollywood's "second Golden Age." During her tenure at the top of the box office, she was a more than capable match for some of the biggest macho stars of the 1970s. |
